RECAP: Women’s Basketball dominates Goldey-Beacom, 80-67

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field and from beyond the arc on Tuesday night to take down Goldey-Beacom, 80-67, in a non-conference matchup at Joseph West Jones Center.

Shippensburg (7-1) had five Raiders in double figures; leading the team was graduate Erin Gibbons in her first start of the season. Gibbons went 7-of-11 from the field and had a career-high 17 points as a Raider. She added three rebounds, a steal and an assist.

Senior Ariel Jones went 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and totaled 16 points. She now climbs to the fourth spot in the Pennsylvania State Athlete Conference (PSAC) all-time career points list, surpassing Theresa Lorenzi (Bloomsburg) and Yolanda Lacey (Cheyney). Jones now has 2,179 career points. She added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in Tuesday's game.

Sophomore Abbie Miller was one point shy from tying her career high, totaling 12 points, and grabbing two rebounds. She was 5-of-9 from the field and added three assists, a block and a steal.

Graduate Mya Woodyard stuffed the stat sheet with a career-high 12 points as a Raider, plus four rebounds, five assists and three steals. Woodyard was 4-for-7 from the field and tied her career high in rebounds and assists that she held back at California (Pa.).

Junior Treasure George had her seventh consecutive game in double figures with 11 points. She added six rebounds and three assists. Senior Lauren Pettis added 10 rebounds, while freshman Ellie Goodwin was perfect from the field going 3-of-3 and totaled a career high of six points in the nine minutes she played. She added a rebound and an assist. Fellow freshman Makayla Foddrell added four points and was 2-of-2 from the field.

SU took control of the game after taking the lead in the last four minutes of the first quarter with a jumper from Miller. In the second quarter, Goldey-Beacom (3-6) was held to 17.6 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Raiders held a 15-point lead by halftime and only had four turnovers in comparison to the Lightning's 11 turnovers.

GBC fought back in the second half and tried to close the gap in the fourth quarter with a 19-10 run with less than eight minutes of play. The Raiders answered with a 12-6 run giving them a 73-59 lead with only 4:47 left in the game. A 9-of-12 clip from the free-throw line helped the Raiders pull away for the victory in the fourth quarter.

Shippensburg will head to Erie, Pa. for back-to-back conference road games, first taking on Mercyhurst at 1 p.m. on Sunday and then Gannon at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

Notes:

  • Shippensburg is ranked third in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll.
  • It is the second straight game that SU shot over 50 percent from the field.
  • It is the first time this season that SU had five players finish in double figures, including four starters, since last season against Salem (Nov. 28).
  • SU's 7-1 record is the best record to begin a season since 2013-14 (7-1).
