Dr. Steven Burg was invited by the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office to present at the February 7, 2023, meeting of the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Board.  He shared with the board the research he conducted during his fall 2022 sabbatical leave in a presentation entitled, “Discovering Pennsylvania’s African American Cemeteries.”  At that meeting, the Board also considered and recommended for listing on the National Register of Historic Places the Midland Cemetery in Swatara Township, Dauphin County.  The Midland Cemetery is a historic African American cemetery that began as a burial ground for enslaved people and continued to serve the Steelton area as a segregated cemetery through the twentieth century  The application was authored by Dr. Burg, Sarah Hoffeditz BA ’21 and MA ’22 with community partners from the Friends of Midland Cemetery, Barbara Barksdale and Jeanie Glaser.
