Volleyball splits Day 2 of the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament

The Shippensburg University volleyball team won their morning match against Fayetteville State, 3-1, but struggled against Northwood, losing 3-0 at the Tony Banner Memorial Volleyball Tournament held inside Tippin Gym.

Shippensburg compiled 68 kills over the course of the two matches, with senior Kaitlyn Townsend leading the team with 19 kills overall.

Senior Jordan Bowen was named to the Tony Banner Memorial All-Tournament team.

The Raiders will travel next weekend to Virginia State for the VSU Home Opener, facing Chowan at 9 a.m. Friday and West Virginia State at 1 p.m.

Shippensburg 3, Fayetteville State 1

Townsend led the team with a career high of 12 kills and only three errors. Freshman Nat Mazzone led the team with 17 assists, while fellow setter freshman Kearstin Davis had 13 assists. Redshirt-junior Alex Leitner  had a team-high of 19 digs, and two aces, while sophomore Kat Negron had 17 digs and five kills.

The first set went back and forth between Shippensburg (1-3) and Fayetteville State (0-3); the Raiders saved three set points and won the set with a Mazzone service ace. In the second set, SU led by as many as seven points, but allowed the Broncos to come back and reduce their deficit to three points.

The third set was a different story. The Broncos dictated the set early, and were up 16-7, but the Raiders came back with an 11-3 run to reduce it to a two-point deficit. Fayetteville State ultimately took the set.

The fourth set was a similar story to the third set, as the Broncos were ahead by 10 points, but the Raiders fought back and tied the set at 23-23. A kill from senior Rachel Verhoef clinched the victory.

Northwood 3, Shippensburg 0

Townsend led the Raiders with seven kills, and Verhoef had five kills and three blocks. Davis had a team high of 11 assists and two kills, while freshman Erica Lampus  had a team high of 14 digs.

SU struggled to find any rhythm and was over-powered by Northwood (2-2) with 46 kills. The Raiders led in the first set but allowed the Timberwolves to go on a 9-2 run to clinch the first set. The second set was a similar fate as the first set. However in the third set, the Raiders fought back from a six-point deficit to reduce the deficit to one point, 22-21. A kill from Verhoef and freshman Kayla Johnson tied the set at 24-24, but back-to-back kills from Northwood secured the victory.
