South Newton issued the following announcement on Sept. 27.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office today warns residents of a phone scam, where the caller asks for money over the phone. Reports are coming from residents stating that the caller says they are a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Deputy.
The caller tells the person that they owe money to the Sheriff’s Office to satisfy a warrant, or they will be arrested. Cumberland County Deputies do not ask for any form of payment over the phone.
When money is owed for fines, costs, and restitution, it is paid at the Clerk of Courts Office, or through the Warrant Collections Unit, at the Cumberland County Courthouse, 1 Courthouse Square, Carlisle.
