Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School issued the following announcement on Oct. 1.

The Shippensburg University men's swimming team opened the 2021-22 season Friday with a tri-meet at West Chester, as the Raiders beat Southern Connecticut State (160-87) but lost to the host Golden Rams (80.5-189.5) in action held at Graham Natatorium.

 

Shippensburg achieved three first-place finishes, as senior Matt Bochanski won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.18 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:13.71. Senior Trevor Woolwine tied for first in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in unison with West Chester's Nolan Benner in 47.94 seconds.

 

Those times were three of Shippensburg's eight individual performances that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards. Woolwine was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming 54.43 seconds, junior David Bussard took second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.50, and senior Andrew Hale finished second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:03.24.

 

Freshman Zaidian Van Orden finished third in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming 22.31 seconds, while senior Vin Salvatore recorded a time in the 200-yard butterfly of 2:02.08.

 

In relay competition, the quartet of Hale, Bochanski, sophomore Matthew Beard and Van Orden completed the 200-yard medley relay in a third-place time of 1:39.33. The meet concluded with freshman Nathan VanNatter, Woolwine, Bussard and junior Tylor Yakaitis completing the 400-yard freestyle relay in a third-place time of 3:22.06.

 

Shippensburg returns to action October 13 against IUP.
