Dickinson College issued the following announcement.
Frédéric Keck, a social anthropologist, will explain how clues in the environment can help us better prepare for future pandemics. His virtual talk, “Pandemic Preparedness and Environmental Awareness,” from Dickinson's Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues, will take place Thursday, Nov. 5, at noon. The online lecture will be available on the Clarke Forum’s website, and the public is invited to watch the discussion and submit questions in the comments section of the YouTube livestream.
Keck will discuss how to prepare for future pandemics by focusing on environmental changes as early warning signals for disease outbreaks. As the director of research at the Laboratory of Social Anthropology (CNRS-Collège de France-EHESS), Keck has been researching the history of social anthropology and contemporary biopolitical questions raised by avian influenza. He is the author of several books and scholarly works dealing with disease and how so-called sentinel animals, particularly birds, can give early warning signs of outbreaks. Keck received the bronze medal of the French National Center for Scientific Research in 2012 and is a fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.
The event is sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and co-sponsored by the departments of East Asian studies and anthropology.
