Big Spring High School issued the following announcement.
Events happening throughout our country continue to fuel social unrest. As communities struggle to work through tragic events related to the deaths of Black and Brown women and men across our nation it certainly challenges each of us to reflect on racism within our society.
As we reflect it is critical to remember that we as a society own this challenge and we all share a role in efforts towards finding a better way. A better way to overcome implicit biases, a better way to live within a more inclusive community, and for the Big Spring School District, a better learning community that consistently focuses on equity, antiracism, diversity, and loving support for all.
Racism anywhere in our world is wrong, it is sad, and we all need to do what we can to be part of the solution. Within the challenge of racism resides the concept of equity. Equity to access similar services, equity to have the opportunity to take part in all that a community has to offer, and for us, all of the many amazing opportunities we have for students at Big Spring. As we grapple as a school system to address equity throughout our system, we need to remember that all means all.
The limited racial diversity within the Big Spring School District does not make conversations about racism any less important. We as a school system pledge to work together in a manner that models behavior that can grow our community. We need to remind ourselves that without education, there will be no meaningful change. Public education can and should be the cornerstone of this work. Public education is a vital component within a democracy, the very fabric that helps us build a generation of life-ready graduates. We must answer the challenge together as a school community, our students deserve that effort.
At Big Spring we acknowledged our challenge of equity and invited our community to help us build the Profile of a Graduate for the Big Spring School District. This Profile has served as a framework that has guided our work as we have taken steps to educate students and staff members on a host of issues centered on race and diversity, implicit and unconscious biases and ways to build an equitable and inclusive school community. We are quite proud of that work to date but we still have much to accomplish.
As we grow through the societal challenges we continue to face, the Big Spring School District is committed to working together with our students, staff and families to continue to build a more equitable and inclusive community. Our work throughout the last couple of years has certainly reinforced the importance of having tough conversations. Recent events have brought those tough conversations even more to the forefront and as a system from the Board of School Directors, administration and entire staff we need to listen, learn and grow together.
The Big Spring School District pledges to support an environment that challenges our learning community to grow in support of collective work that promotes positive systemic change in our community and nation. Big Spring School District Board of Directors and Administration
