Big Spring Middle School issued the following announcement.
Dear Middle School families,
First and foremost, I hope this message finds you healthy and well. Our teachers and staff miss our students immensely and we can’t wait to see them face to face, rather than virtually.
I wanted to reach out with regards to upcoming changes starting April 14th. Starting Tuesday April 14th, teachers are going to be keeping track of the level of participation for each student based upon the completion of activities from within each course. The guidelines for this scoring process are outlined on our middle school webpage. The 3 categories teachers will be reporting on weekly will reflect whether a student was “highly engaged”, “engaged”, or “inadequately engaged”…all based upon the students’ completion of the weekly activities. This scale based upon participation only will be reflected on the 4th marking period report card in the comment section for each course. We will remain with our MP #3 classes/teachers moving forward. We will not be transitioning to our 4th marking period electives teachers…we will remain with our 3rd marking period teachers. Report cards will be generated based upon the standing grades in ASPEN for the 3rd marking period. We anticipate these being printed and mailed closer to the end of April.
Moving forward, we ask that parents continue to encourage our students to do the enrichment activities as it will be reflected on their end of year report card. This participation score will be taking the place of a letter grade for each of your child’s classes. More detailed information regarding the scoring guidelines can be found on our middle school webpage.
If you are a family who collects offline assignments for your child, we will work with you at district office to coordinate a way in which we can collect completed work as you obtain the future offline assignments.
As we move forward, our virtual activities will be planned for the school days reflective on our school calendar. We will not have planned activities on days we are not to be in school based upon our calendar. For planning purposes, we will continue with the google meets reflective of core content being assigned to each day of the week.

The times are picked by each teacher within the time frame of 10-2, and they should be consistent weekly to help you plan within your household. These times can be found on the teacher pages on our website.
Trust me when I say these are not “normal times”, nor do we want them to be. Our middle school teachers are doing an outstanding job of creating activities that will continue our students’ learning as we continue through this health crisis.
As always, if you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or me so we can assist you.
Thanks for all that you are doing to support this process on the home front and continued prayers for the health and safety of all of our students and community.
Be well and have a great rest of your evening.
