State Representative Barb Gleim from Cumberland County has initiated a process to compel the Pennsylvania House to consider Senate Bill 9. This bill aims to prohibit males from participating in women’s sports. Gleim introduced a discharge resolution, which is intended to bypass the committee stage and bring the bill directly to a vote.
Gleim stated, “The majority party in the House has no interest in saving women and girls in sports.” She emphasized that Senate Bill 9 has been stalled in the House Education Committee beyond the required 15 legislative days for a discharge.
United States Secretary of Education Linda McMahon commented on the issue, saying, “Let me be clear – putting men in women’s intimate spaces is not safe or reasonable. Putting them up against women in physical competition is not fair.”
Gleim highlighted that “Pennsylvanians know it’s not fair,” urging for the bill’s consideration before the upcoming school year. She noted that House Democrats control the voting calendar and urged them to advance what is now known as House Resolution 281. According to Gleim, “This issue is one with which 80% of Pennsylvanians agree.”
Senate Bill 9 requires only a simple majority vote to proceed for full House consideration.
