Encouraging Pennsylvania students to reflect on their connection to the state’s history is the focus of a new piece of legislation. Co-authored by state Representatives Barb Gleim and Jared Solomon, the bill was passed by the state House on Monday.
“The legislation would require the Department of Education to establish guidelines and develop materials which teachers may use to encourage students to share their personal experiences and connections to both Pennsylvania and the United States,” said Solomon. The initiative, known as House Bill 354, aims to inspire students through a program titled “What’s Your Pennsylvania Story.”
The bill intends for these educational materials to be integrated into social studies curricula across schools. It is designed in anticipation of the semi-quincentennial celebration of the United States in 2026.
“Our legislation would provide an excellent opportunity to plant seeds for the future as we prepare to celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary in 2026,” Gleim stated. She emphasized that encouraging young people to explore their past could help them understand their role in shaping future events.
House Bill 354 will now proceed to the state Senate for further consideration.
