Rep. Thomas Kutz of Cumberland has announced the allocation of a $49,048 grant from the Watershed Restoration Protection Program to South Middleton Township. The funding is designated for a bioswale project aimed at improving water quality in Yellow Breeches Creek.

The Watershed Restoration Protection Program is part of the Marcellus Legacy Fund programs, established under Act 13 of 2012. It supports projects that restore or maintain restored stream reaches affected by nonpoint source polluted runoff. The ultimate objective is to remove these streams from the Department of Environmental Protection’s Impaired Waters list.

“The Yellow Breeches helps feed water wells in the area and draws visitors for recreational purposes, including fishing,” Kutz stated. “My family has enjoyed visiting the creek for generations. I’m pleased to support this project, which will benefit all.”

The initiative involves retrofitting an existing grass swale into a vegetated bioswale near Misty Meadows neighborhood. This modification aims to filter stormwater entering Yellow Breeches Creek, reducing sediment levels in accordance with best management practice requirements outlined in the township’s pollution reduction plan.
