Citing concerns over procedural tactics, State Representative Sheryl M. Delozier voted against the House Democrats’ $50.61 billion budget proposal. The House Appropriations Committee had amended the bill earlier in the day, leaving little time for members to review changes before it was brought to the chamber for final consideration.
Delozier expressed her dissatisfaction with the process, stating: “The budget actions taken by House Democrats today are disingenuous at best. House Bill 1330 is not an agreed-to compromise with the Senate. This is not a product that will be voted on in the Senate.”
She criticized what she described as legislative grandstanding and highlighted that certain proposed taxes would not become law due to lack of Senate support. “House Democrats are touting legislative victories, but none of the examples they’re citing, like taxes on skill games and recreational marijuana will be signed into law because the Senate will not adopt the bills as drafted,” she said.
Delozier emphasized the importance of meeting deadlines and working collaboratively: “Waiting until July 14 to pass this type of legislation…is a disservice to our constituencies.” She noted her caucus’s advocacy for energy industry investment and support for students and families while expressing concern about fiscal responsibility.
“Our deadline is a real one for many of our constituents. They deserve better,” she added.
