Bridge dedicated to Medal of Honor recipient SFC Randall Shughart

A bridge dedication ceremony will take place in Newville to honor SFC Randall Shughart. The bridge, which carries PA Route 641 over Big Spring Creek on the border of Newville Borough and West Pennsboro Township, will be named the SFC Randall Shughart Memorial Bridge.

Rep. Barb Gleim (R-Cumberland) is organizing the event, which is scheduled for Thursday, May 30, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the American Legion Post 421 located at 28 Shepherd Road in Newville.

SFC Randall Shughart lost his life during a rescue operation on October 3, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia. For his actions during this battle, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The event will include participation from Congressman Scott Perry and Sen. Greg Rothman as well as members of SFC Shughart’s family.
